Exploring an MCC - A Chamber Members Information Session

Monday, June 9, 2025 (4:00 PM - 6:00 PM) (MDT)

Description

Exploring an MCC

The City of Medicine Hat is exploring the possibility of transitioning the distribution and electric generation portions of our energy business to a Municipally Controlled Corporation (MCC) with a Rate Review Committee.

After extensive analysis, KPMG LLP recommended an MCC governance structure to deliver optimal value for the community with respect to the public owned utility. City Council approved development of an implementation plan, which has led to a full disclosure of the prospective business model if an MCC were to be pursued by City Council.

The City is sharing information about this potential governance structure change leading up to a public hearing on Tuesday, June 24 starting at 4 p.m., City Council Chambers, City Hall. Submissions (written or oral) are welcome from Chamber members and the community at large related to support or opposition of the MCC model.

Attend the information session

Connect with the energy team (Managing Director Rochelle Pancoast, Director Travis Tuchscherer, Solicitor Matthew Klasen, Director Lola Barta) at a members only information session on Monday, June 9 from 4-6 p.m. Studio Theatre, Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre

Registration for this session is Open to Chamber Members

In preparation for the information session, we recommend watching this one-hour long segment from the May 20th City Council meeting where the energy team outlines the Municipally Controlled Corporation business structure, value proposition, Rate Review Committee structure, unanimous shareholder agreement, and the process for this proposal.
