News Release: APEX Alberta, Medicine Hat and District Chamber of Commerce, Invest Medicine Hat and Google Canada collaborate to help local businesses

Medicine Hat [July 13, 2020] – To help support our local small businesses, the City of Medicine Hat is joining the ShopHERE powered by Google program, with a goal of getting 250 businesses online this year.

ShopHERE powered by Google, which started in the City of Toronto, helps independent businesses and artists build a digital presence and minimize the economic impact of COVID-19. By recruiting students across the country, including in Medicine Hat, they are able to build and optimize online stores for small independent businesses.

In May, Google announced a $1 million investment to enable Digital Main Street to expand the program to municipalities across the country, offering more businesses the opportunity to build their own online store.

APEX Alberta, Medicine Hat and District Chamber of Commerce and Invest Medicine Hat are thrilled to work with Digital Main Street and Google Canada to make this program available for local businesses. More excitingly, Medicine Hat is the first municipality outside of Ontario to launch this initiative. Interested business can now apply online at ApexAlberta.ca/Shophere

“During these unprecedented times, our businesses must be able to sell online. This partnership enables us to have the right local organizations at the table and the right national partners to get Medicine Hat’s small businesses their own e-commerce site,” says Mayor Ted Clugston. “Thanks to this investment from Google and a financial investment from Invest Medicine Hat, we can look to take steps to support our business community and make the future a little brighter.”

In Canada, small businesses employ 90% of the private sector workforce, but since the COVID- 19 pandemic hit, storefronts across the country have been forced to close their doors. According to the OECD, these closures are likely to hit small and medium-sized businesses hardest. A digital presence brings businesses enormous opportunities for growth, innovation and jobs.

However, digital skills and tools can still seem out of reach to many.

“Since Google began its business in Canada nearly twenty years ago, we’ve been focused on helping Canadian businesses of all sizes to unlock the prosperity of the internet,” says Sabrina Geremia, VP and Country Manager, Google Canada. “We remain optimistic and more determined than ever that technology is the toolkit for a world of opportunities. Our 1 million investment will go towards expanding the ShopHERE program nationally, so we can help small businesses across Canada navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

APEX Alberta, Medicine Hat and District Chamber of Commerce and Invest Medicine Hat will not only play a role in helping our businesses get online but look to further the e-commerce discussion and marketing efforts for promoting our local businesses.
